This city be named after Oaxaca de Juarez who was the 19th century President of Mexico. He was also a national hero. This city is located within the Oaxaca Valley which is situated in the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains.

An important archaeological site named Monte Alban is base very near to this city. It had a population of 526,000 inhabitants contained by the year 2003. It is the place of several ancient settlements like Zapotec and Mixtec. It was invaded and conquered by Spanish people and hence the architecture of the city reflect the typical Spanish colonial style. There were several ancient buildings and constructions in this place but an earthquake destroyed most of them.
