The north was a lot better economically than the south, the north was industrialized, it have lots of factories, that's why they did pretty well during the war.
The south hadn't developed any industrial sector, prior to the civil time of war they were ok because of their cotton production, but during the war nobody in Europe needed cotton, because there was a cotton surplus, as result the southern economy suffered greatly because of this.
The north also counted beside numerous railroads and its population was 3 times larger as that of the south, this make the north more prosperous than the south during the period of war.
