A well known British biscuit firm and founded in 1822 by Joseph Huntley as J. Huntley & Son, the Reading factory closed within 1972, and manufacting stopped in 1976.
In the beginning, the company was a small biscuit baker and confectioner shop situated at number 72 London Street.
Joseph Huntley begin selling his biscuits to travellers on the coaches outside the Crown Inn, which was a main calling point for stage coaches. To prevent breakage on the coach journeys, Joseph would place his biscuits surrounded by a tin. This process evetually ended up growing into two businesses. One was Huntley & Palmers, and the other was Huntley, Bourne and Stevens, which be a biscuit tin manufacturers, founded by Joseph's younger son, who was also called Joseph.
Joseph Huntley retired contained by 1838 due to ill-health. He handed the business over to Thomas, his older son. Thomas found a business partner, George Palmer, who become the driving factor behind the firm's success.
When Thomas Huntley died in 1857, George Palmer continued near the firm with the help of his brothers, Samuel Palmer and William Isaac Palmer.
The Palmers gave money and ground to Reading, and became notable figures. Over 400 different types of biscuits be manufactured by the firm. They innovated many new types of biscuts, one of these being the infamous 'Nice' biscuit.
