The 109 1-Ton Land Rover was introduced in June 1969, near the wrap up of Series 2A production. It was rolled out late enough for production models to hold wing mounted headlamps. Prototypes and early promotional material for the new model feature the earlier grille-mounted headlamps.
The 109 1-ton was basically a standard 109 next to an uprated payload, the extra quarter ton bringing the load capacity up to the full 1-Ton of its name. This extra nouns capacity was firmly aimed at commercial users, utilities, the public sector and farmers who require extra carrying capability off-road.
To pedal the extra weight, the 109 1-Ton, which continued in production until 1977 as a Series 3 variant, have lower transfer box gearing and larger wheels. A different suspension arrangement was also used to see longer spring shackles to be used in order to improve clearance for the bigger tyres.
