The Internet was not really invented but grew out of the U.S. Military's search for a path to defend against a large area attack. They connected a mixture of computers together across the United States using physical media and it gradually developed into something called the ARPANET. As more and more computers connected to this meet people it grew and grew. Eventually the Internet was born on people's desires to be able to communicate with respectively other over long distances.
For the military to send messages encrypted that could bypass different areas that are shut down, since it takes different routes and pieces together the information at the last location.
