Can An Electric Motor Consume More Electicity Than It Is Rated To Use?
My spa motor is 1/3hp, and use it the same or less than we did a year ago. Energy bill has doubled, and utility co say that the reason is the spa use. Under what conditions can the spa motor/heater consume more amperage than it is rated to use? How can it use more kilowatts with same or smaller quantity use? Conversely, spa repairman says utility co is wrong. Motor has finite energy draw; thus, same or smaller amount use means same or less kilowatts used. Who's right?
Answer:
An OLD electric motor can use more energy than rate for due to the fact that the bushings will become worn and will use more electricity to turn the armature. Heating coils can use more electricity if there is more than one circuit and one is burnt out cause the one working to run longer to heat the water.
