I think it is a little of everything combined. As payphones become a article of the past (AT&T just announced they are getting rid of 65000 and there are individual 1 million in the US today), you need to be able to be surrounded by touch. I also know several people who have gotten rid of there lan flash and gone with a home cell phone as it is more cost effective.
With all the gadget they put on them now, they are quickly becoming addictive to gamers and txters and such.
Mobile phone in profession is an necessity, wherever you progress you can be in touch with people.
It is extraordinarily bad to hear that some people are using for anti social activities.

This is my opinion only. Some people are addicted to their cell phone and explicitly strange to me who only uses her phone for phone calls when necessary. Like what flavor be I suppose to buy in ice cream for you or such. Or help my tire only went flat.
