The giraffe is the tallest living animal with males standing over five metres. For this reason, science has be intrigued by the giraffe's ability to regulate its blood pressure.
When you think of it, a giraffe should spend a lot of its time faint. Its head is around three metres above its heart, so when it stoops to drink you would expect it to get a rush of blood to the head. One moment the heart is pumping three metres against gravity, and the subsequent it's pumping blood three metres in the opposite direction with gravity.
Evolution have ensured the giraffe has adaptations to cope beside these blood-pumping extremes. For instance, the blood vessels supplying the brain, the carotid arteries, are divided into a tightly packed network of smaller vessel before allowing blood to enter the brain. But in the giraffe, these smaller vessels own very elastic walls to accommodate the excess blood that would otherwise flood the brain when the giraffe lowered its head. When it returns to its full plane, there is already sufficient blood to supply the brain for the few moments it takes the giraffe's heart to readjust .
