Atomic number of an atom is equal to the number of protons or number of electrons present in the atom. When an electron and a proton is added to an atom, the atomic number of the atom increase. With increase in the atomic number the ionic radius of the atom also increases. The ionic radius of the atom increases because, when a proton is added to the nucleus a force of repulsion increases between the protons of the nucleus. Due to this repulsion they move away from each other. Similarly, beside the addition of an electron, the electrons present in the atom repel each other. As a result, the ionic radius of the atom increases. Moreover, surrounded by some elements the ionic radius decreases with increase in atomic number.
