H.G. Wells ( author of  'The War of the Worlds' and 'The Time Machine')  is Midhurst Grammar School's most famous alumni. Midhurst Grammar school is Midhurst's main academy, and was founded in 1672. H. G. Wells worked as an assistant teacher at the arts school, until he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science.

Other famous people who hold been sighted in Midhurst include Prince Charles and other members of the Royal Family. They are see at the 'Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup', which is a major polo competition with the final held outside the ruins on the estate of Lord Cowdray.
