The epiglottis is a flap in the throat, that closes over the trachea when swallowing. It prevents food from entering the trachea and then, our lungs. Without an epiglottis, when we swallowed, food would pass into our lungs, as unwilling our stomach.
It is a cartilaginous flap which covers the wind pipe and prevents entry of food into the lungs while you are eating .Therefore one should not talk while drinking . First swallow what you are eating then talk .
