What Is A Mass Defect?
Answer:
The difference in mass of a nucleus and the sum of the masses of its nucleons is called mass irregularity. In other words, the mass of any nucleus is less than the the sum of the masses of its constituent particles, it is set as mass defect. A nucleus is consists of neutrons and protons. Therefore, the theoretical mass of any nucleus can be written as;
Theoretical mass = total mass of protons + total mass of neutrons
Theoretical mass = Z mp + N mn
But when masses of nucleus are measured experimentally (by mass spectrometer), it is found that the mass of a nucleus is less than the sum of the masses of its nucleons. If Mn is the mass of nucleus then,
Mn < Z mp + N mn
