First, deserts are not always hot in the daytime (some are really cold), because a place is classified a desert because it receives smaller quantity than 250mm of rain annually.

Now to the answer:
The thing that keeps the warmth in at night, and the thing that keep the heat out in the day, surrounded by other areas, is the clouds. And what are clouds made of? Water, the thing that deserts are deprived of. And because there is no water, there's no clouds. And because nearby are no clouds, it gets really hot in the daytime and really cold at night.
