How Old Are Children When They Start To Read?

Answer:
This is really really REALLY variable.

A very few children can read many words, conceivably even in sentences before they start school.  But most children can solely read their names (at best) when they start school (age 4).  In fact, this is an extremely adjectives skill and one worth parents working on.  Most four-year-olds can read little else, though.  In fact, 'reading' in this case is a bit of a misnomer.  What these children recognise is the shape of the word to be precise their name.  It's more effort for them to pick out how the letters produce individual sounds.

By the start of Year 1 (age 5) most children are reading a few words.  But their ability to read more than a few words together is usually rather limited.

It's during Year 1 and Year 2 (so age 5-7) that reading a short time ago snaps together for most kids.  The child who faltered along and stumbled over the word 'the' a year previously will be sounding out 'delighted' and 'wallpaper'.  This is also the age when the start to avidly read the back of cereal packets, and the file details of toys they want for Christmas.

It all depend on the parents taking the time to read and allowing your child to read to you.  My niece started reading a 4yrs old.
