What Is An Assisted Delivery (childbirth)?

Answer:
When forceps or ventouse are used.

Forceps are basically like big metal prongs.  They can be used to grip around the baby's head and (gently) verbs baby out.

Ventouse is basically a vacuum suction system that can be used to (gently) "suck" the baby down the vaginal conduit.

Both forceps and ventouse can be considered more desirable outcomes than a Cesarian section.  It is thought that one reason C-section rates are lower in Britain than within the USA is because of the widespread use of forceps and ventouse in Europe.

A Cesarian section is key abdominal surgery with (usually) more risks for mother and child than a vaginal childbirth that is nearly complete.

However, ventouse/forceps both require an incision to be made (in the mother's perineum).  This results in extra stomach-ache, more time needed to heal, bruising and occasionally brief incontinence post childbirth for the mother.

Babies delivered by ventouse are frequently very bruised and may enjoy (temporarily) odd shaped heads.  Anecdotal evidence suggests that babies delivered by ventouse/forceps are grumpier and nurture less well then babies who are deliver vaginally without these aids.  Many parents ague that cranial osteopathy for their babies born after ventouse/forceps was essential and very beneficial.
