I recently went to a 21st birthday and was moderately surprised at the formality of it all. Indeed many young culture might just go out for a meal beside parents or friends, but this party was a full-on celebration!
The birthday girl made a speech towards the end of the do which thanked all her family and friends for coming to see her (she have a surprise 'do) and made some nice comments about growing up with such a great mum and support network. Obviously this isn't your Oscar speech, so you shouldn't over egg the pudding, but be sure to take home thanks for things like nice presents and special arrangements that have be made.
