Where Should We Live In San Diego? Housing Budget Is Around $300,000.

Answer:
Is that all you can afford?  SD is hideously expensive to live in.  see table on 26 May blog entry, for 2004-2005 data.  August 2006, culture were quoting $300 per sq foot on average - that would get you 1000 sq feet of property, within theory.

And then it all depends how much space you call for.

Personally I would always try to live close to my workspace -- cycling distance at least if not walking distance.  At most minuscule you cut down on commuting costs then.

If working downtown, I'd try for Hillcrest or Golden Hills.   You might be able to get a small house or condo for that price beneath the flight path; I grew up under that flight path... you do achieve used to it!

Beach areas you're reduced to the grottiest corners of Ocean Beach and parts of Point Loma (not the nice parts), or possibly Clairemont and Linda Vista.  But living in Clairemont you really would be dependent on using the car for everything.

For central locations you might find a condo contained by East Mission Valley or even a dinky house in parts of North Park.

If you really need a bigger place, you're going to have to consider places approaching National City (good freeway access, at least), Lakeside and Santee, and even further out into the red neck zones.
