Where Is The Temperature Knob On A Hot Water Heater?

Answer:
It's not always easy to find, or in my valise, adjust.  Follow the manual's safety precautions explicetly.  Too high (above 120degF) will cause burns within less than 8 minutes. The only reason to set a thermostat better would be increased demand in the household. Reducing it off course save money.  If you don't have an owners manual don't even attempt it since some controls are knobs and some are set next to a screwdriver.  IN EVERY CASE THE POWER TO THE HEATER MUST BE SHUT OFF FIRST! I personally discourage you to change it on your own.  Some heaters have more than one control and they must be set equal.  There's usually a red reset button as well.  The controls are usually hidden behind insulation contained by an access panel.  Leave any plastic pieces in place, only move the insulation temporarily. You might be able to download a encyclopaedia from the manufactuer or get advice on RepairClinic's site...but they would likely presage you as well.  If you are a member of a church or synagogue there may be someone familier near this adjustment that would help you avoid a service call.  If you're trying to save money do it an easier mode. Take showers rather than baths.  Locate and shut off the main breaker when on vacation for long periods....and if it's the original one over 15 years, replace it with a importantly efficient one and you'll save money, AND the inconvenience of trying to get it fixed within a hurry. The fact you needed to ask the question is enough information for me to discourage you from attempting this lacking a professional.
Well, I don't know about all that... Mine just have a dial on it. Many people have it set far too high, surrounded by my opinion—so high that to take a shower in it requires that they mix it partially and half with cold water, a complete leftovers of energy. You'll save a LOT if you keep it set so you can shower within it without needing to cool it back down to a tolerable heat.

When I was in college, we had a sink that would capture so hot we could actually brew coffee straight from the tap.
