Am Installing Ceramic Tile In A 2nd Story Bathroom In An Old House, Bought Hardybacker But First Put Down Level Quick As The Existing Old Tiles Were Not In Good Shape , Floor Not Flat. Now I Hear You Should Not Put Hardbacker On SLC ? Y/n ?
The floors are very sturdy, but the old tiles possibly asbestos so don;t want to disturb. I did not put a thick coat of the Level Quick down but it did back flatten the floor. Why can't I thinest then screw on the Hardiebacker ?

You could do it either way. If you use the underwriter make sure the screws will penetrate the inspired subfloor. You should feel no bounce in the floors.
Using the backer board is the right choice. It is recommended to use thinset below and on the seam. Like the previous comment, you don't want any bouncing in the floor, if so you will get grout popping out. Use plenty of screws and you should be ok
