Is Corn Syrup Okay To Eat?
Answer:
Well, it's been passed as safe by the US Food and Drug Agency. Often when you see corn syrup in an ingredient schedule it actually means "high fructose corn syrup" (HFCS).
HFCS is basically fermented corn (maize) starch processed to endow with it a high fructose content. It's a lot cheaper to refine, transport and use than ordinary sugar, hence why it's so adjectives in processed foods in the USA.
HFCS is likely to be made from genetically modified corn and enzymes, you may not be comfortable next to that.
HFCS is commonly used to sweeten fizzy drinks. But in spite of having the same number of calories as tedious sugar, it may not (at least one study found this) satiate hunger as well (complicated chemistry). So it may be more likely to promote corpulence.
HFCS is very high in fructose; a diet illustrious in fructose can have a disasterous affect on the nutritional status of rats; humans aren't rats, but even so....
The HFCS manufacturers show to be false all that, of course. See their replies here.
