What Is The Importance Of CAIA As A Qualification?

Answer:
I have just passed Level II of the CAIA exams (and received the charter), and am writing CFA Level III in June. In my belief, the CAIA is still a very immature designation, that is not enormously well known in the bazaar. The approach taken with the course readings is interesting though, in that they focus on, for example the quantitative results of trading strategies (viz. Anson's Handbook of Alternative Investments, or Kestner's Quantitative Trading Strategies). Both suitable reads, but frustrating when the results are dated, or clearly wrong. The CFA material (all levels) is much better thought out and comprehensive (been going longer and more resources). So while there undeniably is a role for the CAIA designation, I would view it as a fill-up for the CFA, not really robust enough to be a standalone reference qualification for the commission market. This may well change over time. Also the go by rates are too high for credibility (62% for the Level II in March 2009), this will presumably come down as they build more critical mass.
