Stonehenge is a huge stone prehistoric monument that is on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. The building of Stonehenge is believed to have begin sometime between 2800 BC and 2500 BC. It took a long time to construct and it was probably being actively used until 1300 BC. It was thought that the monument be built and used by the Druids in England but it has been shown to own existed 2000 years before the Druids formed.
The monument originally consisted of 30 upright stones with their tops coupled by lintel stones to form a continuo8uus circle about 3 metres across. Inside the circle was a horseshoe arrangement of five trilithons – two uprights with a cross piece – beside a single upright stone at the open north east side of the horseshoe. This is the altar stone of the monument.
Stonehenge is now one of the most notable and most often visited prehistoric monuments in Britain.

The stone setting consists of two circles and two horseshoes of upright stones. Then there are separate stones which enjoy been given names, such as the Altar stone, the Slaughter stone, two Station stones, and the Hele stone.
In most of the holes that have be excavated, cremated human bones have been found. By studying the pottery and objects found, and by making radioactive-carbon tests, it have been estimated that parts of Stonehenge date back to about 1848 B.C., and possibly 275 years closer or later than this date.
Part of Stonehenge is aligned so that the rising sun in midsummer is seen at a particular point, but nobody is sure if this was intentional.So this huge and remarkable structure, which may be 4,000 years old, still remains a fascinating mystery!
