The real origins of the Burlesque which developed in the 19th century date back to the Italian Comedia dell Arte of the 16th century.
Then players or performer carried a 'burle' or stick which had one padded end, used to hit or slap other performer for the entertainment of the audience. Hence the word burlesque.
The gendre as we now know it originated around 1840, as a source of rivalry between the classes in Victorian society.
The so call highbrow tastes in theatre and the arts be parodied by the working classes in their own form of consciously 'low' brow humour.
Burlesque encompass parody and wit. Performers were overwhelmingly female, though not exclusively so as it blended music foyer and vauderville types of entertainment.
It came to include music, chanson, dancing, mine, comedy and even striptease. It is saucy and suggestive.
Famous people associated near Burlesque were Gypsy Rose Lee, W.C Fields, Abbott and Costello.
In recent years there's been a revival in the New Burlesque Movement.
