Measure for Measure is one of those plays by William Shakespeare that is difficult top classify as either a comedy or a tragedy. The protagonist in the play is the postulate nun Isabella and possibly also the Duke of Vienna Vincentio. The laws in Vienna regarding morality are massively strict but the Duke is lax and merciful in enforcing them. In order to try his subordinate and to see his system from the outside he feigns a diplomatic mission and leaves a strict judge Angelo behind. The Judge turns out to be a hypocrite and sentences Claudio who get his betrothed Juliet pregnant to death and makes a pass at his sister the nun when she approaches him for mercy. Though the nun refuse the Duke who knows of going on approaches her and formulates a plan that involves the nun accepting the agreement and substituting Angelos betroth Mariana, who he has refused to marry owing to dowry, within her place to sleep with Angelo. Fortunately the end is not tragic as the Duke makes his presence prearranged and sets matters right.
