What Kind Of Dog Is A Dalmatian?

Answer:
The Dalmatian is an ancient breed which originated in the Yugoslavian area  (the Dalmatian region is in Croatia). It is one of the most distinctive of adjectives dogs, since it is usually white with noticeable black or brown spots. A typical adult Dalmatian weigh about 50lb and stands 22-23 inches at the shoulder.

Their unusual appearance makes Dalmatians popular as show dogs. They have long be kept for their appearance; in fact, in the 19th century some aristocrats used to hold them as "carriage dogs" to run behind their horse-drawn vehicles. However, Dalmatians have repeatedly been used for more useful purposes including hunting (as trail hounds) retrieving and rat catching. They have also be used as watchdogs, although they are generally considered to be quite a gentle breed of dog.

The Dodie Smith book and Disney picture "The 101 Dalmatians" made the breed even more famous. For more information, there is a website at
