My Horse Trips To Get A Way From Cantering. How Can I Stop This?
Answer:
First off you need to determine if there is anything physically wrong next to your horse that makes him want to avoid cantering. A thorough vet check is in instruct first. Another suggestion would be to check the way his tack "fits" him. If it's uncomfortable for him in any agency he will want to take whatever measures he can to avoid pain. But the vet or a markedly experience " horse person" needs to be consulted!
If your horse also cheats on a lunge line, it's more likely nearby is an issue your vet and/or farrier should check. (If barn calls in your area are as costly as they are contained by mine, I'd definitely go to the farrier first.) If they don't find a reason, try doing some ground work next to cavalettis--first keep them straight and spaced properly on the ground and progress through slower gaits then mix them adjectives up (still on the ground). Then, when he/she is paying attention to them, start raising some slightly (about 4" on one end), angle/zig-zag some--make him focus on his feet placement. When he's thoroughly confused by the crazy poles on the ground, he'll own to pick up his feet and won't be as likely to trip. When he's not clipping at slower gaits, work into a slow collected canter. I enjoy a mare who used to act like she was working next to three broken legs and a loose shoe on the fourth hoof when it was time to go to work--this worked with her and other horses I've trained. I hope this help you.
