What Are Fish Doing When They Spawn?
Answer:
Spawning is the mating process which, for fish, happens entirely underwater and with severely little physical contact. Coldwater fish breed in the warmer months but only if they are not overcrowded. If the fish population is sufficient for the size of pond and available food supply the womanly fish will reabsorb her eggs and any surviving baby fish will probably be eaten. If there is room for a growing fish population and adequate plant cover to shelter the eggs, then one male fish can fertilise a dozen or more females. He does this by chasing the females round and bashing into them to stimulate them to deposit spawn (their fish eggs) which he next fertilises with his "milt". Fertilisation takes about 20 minutes. Spawn survives best when at hand is plenty of plant cover and a currently healthy fish population as it is very vulnerable to fungal attack. It single takes three or four days for the fertilised spawn to hatch as small "fry". Then they take their place near the bottom of the food cuff until only a minority survive into adulthood.
